MQB Platform Rear Suspension: Fixed Beam, or Multi-Link?

If you've already read our blog about identifying your Front Axle weight in order to choose the correct suspension kit; you may also be wondering how to check which type of rear suspension you have. It's a fairly straight forward thing to check; and I will provide some images below for you to compare.
First up, we have the Multi-Link Rear suspension.
If you have a performance Model, such as a GTI / GTD / R / S / RS - Your car will always have this.
The Golden rule, was said to be that all cars with 180ps or more, will have the Multi-Link Rear suspension setup.
An easy way to look at this, is that the two sides are allowed to move independently; and are linked centrally to a rear subframe.
After this, we have the Fixed Beam Rear suspension.
The General rule here is that models with 150ps or less are supposed to run this setup; however have seen an increasing number of special models such as the 'R-Line' and 'S-Line' vehicles, with Sports Suspension options where they use the Multi-Link Rear suspension.
It's fairly easy to check though, as this setup has a singular bar running across the width of the car's underside just infront of the rear wheels 'fixing' the two rear suspension arms together.
There's no subfame as such on this type; and no separate anti-roll bar; as the Fixed Beam itself adds a good amount of tortional rigidity.
Conclusion.
If you've had a read through and checked over your car and still can't suss out which version you have; Please do feel free to contact us; maybe send us over some photos of the underside of your car so that we can identify it.
