Awesome GTI Blogs – The Top Induction Solutions For Your MQB-Platform Car
It's only been with us for a few short years, yet already the VAG MQB platform has earned an exemplary reputation amongst the ever-growing tuned VW community, with the power and torque figures potentially on offer nothing short of astonishing. While the likes of the VW Golf GTI and R, Audi S3/A3 and TTS, Seat Leon Cupra and Skoda Octavia vRS are hugely accomplished, impressively powerful cars 'right out of the box,' Awesome GTI understands that there's always scope for improvement via the aftermarket, hence why we've opted to produce this list, one that details some of our most popular tuning solutions.
The first in a series of tuning guides for some of the most popular VAG models around, this particular offering covers one of the most popular steps individuals take when it comes to extracting more power from their car of choice, induction. It's one of the oldest tuning tricks in the book and one which makes a huge deal of sense; a free-flowing induction tract will remove restrictions inherent in the design of the OE inlet, allowing the engine to breathe better and deeper, and in turn flow a greater volume of air, resulting in more power, sharpened throttle response, and in most instances, a pleasing induction roar!
1) Racingline R600 Intake System
A stunning product that's already found hundreds of homes across the globe, the Racingline R600 intake is a very sophisticated kit, and one which has been dyno-proven to deliver improved power and torque figures. The reason it's proved so effective is its innovative design, one which features twin front air intakes and a truly gargantuan TriFoam double-volume filter (a full 53,277mm² greater than the OEM part), the latter rated to 600bhp.
The R600 delivers exceptional performance with gains of between 5 and 10bhp to be expected in most applications, plus peak torque of approximately 473nm and a faster turbo spool time. Power and torque aside, the R600's triple-layer laminate open cell polyurethane foam can filter all the way down to 5 microns, effectively protecting your engine from damage from contaminants.

2) Forge Motorsport Carbon Fibre Intake
This offering from the alloy component gurus at Forge Motorsport illustrates just how hard aftermarket firms have to work in order to be able to produce products that deliver tangible, real world performance gains over and above those boasted by the factory fitted gear. Forge has well and truly delivered in this respect though, and its carbon fibre intake is certainly one of the best looking in this list thanks its 'dry,' un-lacquered finish, which harks back to the kind of motorsport applications carbon was originally designed to fulfill.
Appearances aside, the Forge Motorsport carbon fibre intake is able to deliver real world performance improvements, something achieved thanks to its unique design and induction route. Forge's offering manages to force a greater volume of cool air into the 1.8 and 2.0 EA888 engines by running the full width of the slam panel, a route that permits it to exploit cold air ducts already in situ from the factory but not actually utilised by the OE part.

3) APR Carbon Intake System
Another achingly pretty carbon fibre induction solution, this time from the guys at APR. The result of many months of at times painstaking development work, the APR Carbon intake system exploits the compromises inherent in the design of the standard VW induction route, compromises all but essential for a mass-market, mainstream car manufacturer, yet simply a hinderance to those that value pure performance above all else.
Those willing to accept a louder induction noise (and let's face it, most of us see an increased induction roar as a good thing) will be treated to a raft of subtle performance enhancements, the most prominent one being greater power and torque throughout the rev range, a change which serves to make both sizes of EA888 engine far more responsive, tractable propositions. Those that opt to install APR's induction offering will also likely experience a more responsive sensation upon depressing the throttle pedal, and possibly a slight upswing in fuel economy.

4) AWE Tuning S-Flo Carbon Intake
Looking for all the world like the kind of setup you'd expect to see peeking out from the nose of a fully paid up BTCC car, the AWE S-Flo is, as you've no doubt worked out by this point in the list, a decidedly trick intake kit from the team at AWE. Fully sealed and with one of AWE's much vaunted S-Flo filters inside, the carbon intake packs a mighty punch and has been shown to deliver performance and drivability gains in all applications, and a stunning induction noise to boot.
Important as the performance side of this package is, what's perhaps more impressive are the lengths to which AWE has gone to to ensure that its latest offering can be integrated with the OE hardware swiftly and seamlessly. In practice this means that it perfectly mates with the VW inlet ducting, utilises the stock mounting points and won't throw on those oh-so annoying Check Engine Lights, meaning that you can be up and running within no time.
Last but not least, the carbon utilised to make AWE's offering for the EA888 engines packs a UV stabilised resin and clear coat, a finish shown to prevent yellowing from the high temperatures generated by any performance oriented engine, a key point for those that like to show their car bonnet open!

5) Neuspeed P-Flow Air Intake
Distinct from most of the other entries on this list in that it's an 'open' design, Neuspeed's P-Flow intake is nonetheless well worth considering, particularly if your budget can't quite stretch to one of the enclosed carbon fibre offerings.
It might lack the pub bragging rights of some of its full carbon rivals, yet the P-Flow manages to undercut most by a significant amount, while still providing increases in performance, throttle response, and both induction and diverter valve noise. It also ships with everything required for a simple fitment process, including a 3in aluminium intake pipe that's mandrel bent to perfectly fit within the confines of the MQB platform's engine bay, a beefy looking heat shield and an oiled, multi-layer cotton gauze air filter with a built in velocity stack for smooth, even air flow properties.

7) Racingline Cup Edition Intake System
The most affordable offering on this list yet also one of the most effective and best proven, the VW Racing Cup Edition intake is worth considering if you value performance above all else. Proven to offer impressive gains in both bhp and torque, the intake is backed up by VW Racing's many, many years of experience both racing and tuning all manner of VAG products.
The Racingline Cup Edition Intake functions in the manner you'd expect, effectively shovelling cooler air into the inlet side of the engine via its oversized intake filter. It's a time honoured product and one which will look right at home perched upon the engine of any tweaked MQB platform car.
